The 2002 Z3 is an important vehicle to BMW for the coupe market segment. The M Coupe is a member of a series of four trim levels for the Z3 which include Coupe, M Coupe, and M Roadster. The two-door car with its rear-wheel drive is positioned to aggressively fill this niche for BMW. There is strong competition from vehicles from Infiniti.

The M Roadster configuration is powered by the 3.2-liter six-cylinder engine, which makes 26 highway miles and 19 city. The Z3 competes in the Convertible market segment, in direct competition with Hyundai.

The Z3 Coupe is equipped with a BMW 3.0 liter six-cylinder engine that utilizes 24 valves. The engine is mated to a ZF 5-speed Transmission. This configuration has proven to be a successful design for BMW.
