There have been several award-winning cars from Porsche over the years, including the Porsche Boxster of 1997. There are one trim levels to the Boxster, including Base. The Base version is one of the more popular options, outselling other configurations. Like in 1996 the popular 2.5 liter has made this a popular choice for convertible buyers nationwide.

1997 Porsche Boxster Base Specs

The restyled Boxster Base is equipped with a 2.5-liter six-cylinder engine that utilizes 24 valves. The engine is mated to a ZF five-speed transaxle. This has resulted in an increase in horsepower and torque over the 1996 version.

The fuel system for the 1997 Boxster is a traditional Bosch Motronic SFI, running on gasoline fuel. The fuel is controlled by an electronic system and is a fuel-injected MFI design. The capacity of the fuel tank is 15.30 gallons.

Steering control is handled through a power-steering rack-style configuration. The Boxster comes equipped with power-assisted brakes, with 4-Wheel ABS support. The front brakes are disc while the rear brakes are disc. The car uses coil front springs and coil in the rear.

The Boxster is 171.00 inches long, 70.10 inches wide, and 50.80 inches high. It has a wheelbase of 95.20 inches. It is able to seat 2 comfortably.

The listed retail price in 1997 (MSRP) was $39,980, with a dealer invoice cost of $34,383. This price is in line with the industry average price for a two-door Convertible.

The standard warranty period for the Boxster is 24 months, or Unlimited miles, whichever comes first. There is also a warranty on the powertrain for 24 months or Unlimited miles respectively. This is standard in the convertible market.

Fuel Efficiency

The 1997 Boxster gets 26 - 27 miles/gallon on the highway and only 17 - 19 in the city. This is below average for a convertible car.

There are several reasons why the Porsche Boxster Base sold well in 1997. Mainly the increase in availability and a marked improvement in quality meant the buying public was more apt to choose a Porsche, specifically a Boxster.

    I’m liking Hyundai over Porsche. It think it’s the difference in reliability. My first Boxster worked quite well, but the second one (a Base BTW) didn’t fare so well…
