A high point in the convertible market is the BMW Z4. In 2006 BMW rolled out an upgraded version of the Z4 with five versions: M Coupe, Coupe 3.0si, M Roadster, Roadster 3.0i, and Roadster 3.0si. Sales for the Z4, especially the Z4 Roadster 3.0si, were brisk during 2006 and 2007. The improved reliability and the sporty styling were responsible for the increased interest.

Under the Hood

Standard equipment in the Z4 for 2005 and 2006 includes the 3.0 liter engine by BMW, weighing in at 6 cylinders and twenty four valves. A 6-speed Standard Transmission puts the power of the engine to the pavement. The has proven to be a popular configuration for the Z4.

The Z4 uses power-assisted brakes, with 4-Wheel ABS support. The front brakes are disc while the rear brakes are disc. Steering is handled through a power-steering rack-style configuration. The car uses coil and coil springs front and rear respectively.

Statistics

The Z4 is 161.10 inches long, 70.10 inches wide, and 51.10 inches high. It has a wheelbase of 98.20 inches. It is able to seat 2 comfortably.

The listed retail price in 2006 (MSRP) was $35,600, with a dealer invoice cost of $32,575. This price is on target the industry average price for a two-door Convertible.

Fuel Efficiency

The fuel system for the 2006 Z4 is a traditional Siemens MS 70, running on gasoline fuel. The fuel is controlled by an electronic system and is a fuel-injected MFI design. The capacity of the fuel tank is 14.50 gallons.

The Z4 Roadster 3.0si received a miles-per-gallon rating of 20 - 21 in-city driving and 29 - 30 when it came to highway driving. Being a gas-powered non-hybrid car, this was within normal parameters.

What We Think of the BMW Z4

The 2005 model began the promise of the BMW Z4. The 2006 expanded on this success and has proven to be a strong seller in most markets. Even with strong competition from other manufacturers BMW hopes that the Z4 Roadster 3.0si will continue to be a profitable vehicle.
