The 1997 Z3 is an important vehicle to BMW for the convertible market segment. The Roadster is a member of a series of one trim levels for the Z3 which include Roadster. The two-door car with its rear-wheel drive is positioned to aggressively fill this niche for BMW. There is strong competition from vehicles from Nissan.

BMW Z3 Engine Specs

The Z3 Roadster is equipped with a BMW 1.9 liter four-cylinder engine that utilizes 16 valves. The engine is mated to a GMC 4-speed Transmission. This configuration has proven to be a successful design for BMW.

Steering control is handled through a power-steering rack-style configuration. The Z3 has power-assisted brakes, with 4-Wheel ABS support. The front brakes are disc while the rear brakes are disc. The car uses coil front springs and coil in the rear.

Vehicle Statistics

The dimensions of the Z3 Roadster are 68.50 inches wide by 158.50 inches long. It sits a comfortable 50.90 inches off the ground. It seats a standard two passengers, with 2 doors. The wheelbase of 96.30 allows for limited leg room for the backseat passengers.

The original manufacturer suggested retail price (MSRP) was $35,900 when new, with a dealer invoice cost of $31,455. This price was in line with the industry average price for a 2-door Convertible.

Fuel Efficiency

Fuel is handled for the Z3 is a Bosch ML-Motronic design, running on gasoline fuel. The gasoline is managed by an electronic system and is a fuel-injected MFI design. The 13.50-gallon tank provides the fuel storage for longer trips.

The 1997 Z3 gets 25 - 27 miles/gallon on the highway and only 18 - 19 in the city. This is exceptional for a convertible car.

The 1996 model began the promise of the BMW Z3. The 1997 expanded on this success and has proven to be a strong seller in most markets. Even with strong competition from other manufacturers BMW hopes that the Z3 Roadster will continue to be a profitable vehicle.

    I saw the recent news about BMWs and their reliability. I personally would check out web sites like edmunds.com and others before I made a choice of a car like the Z3.
