Not Your Mother’s X5 – The 2008 BMW X5 3.0si

BMW X5

A high point in the sport utility market is the BMW X5. In 2008 BMW released an upgraded version of the X5 with two versions: 4.8i and 3.0si. Sales for the X5, especially the X5 3.0si, were brisk during 2008 and 2009. The improved reliability and the sporty styling were responsible for the sales boost.

BMW X5 Engine Specs

The restyled X5 3.0si is equipped with a 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine that utilizes 24 valves. The engine is mated to a ZF six-speed transmission. This has resulted in an increase in horsepower and torque over the 2007 version.

Steering control is handled through a power-steering rack-style configuration. The X5 comes equipped with power-assisted brakes, with 4-Wheel ABS support. The front brakes are disc while the rear brakes are disc. The truck uses coil front springs and coil in the rear.

The fuel system for the 2008 X5 is a traditional Siemens MS 70, running on gasoline fuel. The fuel is controlled by an electronic system and is a fuel-injected MFI design. The capacity of the fuel tank is 22.50 gallons.

Vehicle Statistics

The X5 is 191.10 inches long, 76.10 inches wide, and 69.50 inches high. It has a wheelbase of 115.50 inches. It is able to seat 5 comfortably.

The standard warranty period for the X5 is 48 months, or 50,000 miles, whichever comes first. This is standard in the sport utility market.

The listed retail price in 2008 (MSRP) was $45,900, with a dealer invoice cost of $42,230. This price is on target the industry average price for a four-door Sport Utility.

MPG Ratings

The 2008 X5 gets 21 miles/gallon on the highway and only 15 in the city. This is subpar for a sport utility truck.

The vehicle is available in Alpine White, Black Sapphire Metallic, Deep Green Metallic, Jet Black, Mineral Green Metallic, Monaco Blue Metallic, Platinum Bronze Metallic, Space Gray Metallic, and Titanium Silver Metallic.

What We Think of the BMW X5

The 2008 model year was telling year for the BMW X5. The introduction of several trim levels (along with the 3.0si version) meant that buyers could find the version that best suited their needs.
