Insight Into the BMW X5 for 2003

BMW X5

Several things can be said about the BMW X5 series: including the polarizing reactions most buyers have towards their truck. The eight-cylinder engine is at the heart of the strong emotions, it is powerful for its class and delivers a large amount of torque.

BMW X5 Engine Specs

The restyled X5 4.6is is equipped with a 4.6-liter eight-cylinder engine that utilizes 32 valves. The engine is mated to a ZF five-speed transmission. This has resulted in an increase in horsepower and torque over the 2002 version.

The fuel system for the 2003 X5 is a Bosch M 7.2 system, running on gasoline . The fuel is controlled by an electronic system and is a fuel-injected MFI design. The 24.30-gallon tank provides the fuel storage for longer trips.

The X5 uses power-assisted brakes, with 4-Wheel ABS support. The front brakes are disc while the rear brakes are disc. Steering is handled through a power-steering rack-style configuration. The truck uses coil and coil springs front and rear respectively.

Vehicle Statistics

The dimensions of the X5 4.6is are 73.70 inches wide by 183.70 inches long. It sits 69.00 inches off the ground. It seats a standard five passengers, with 4 doors. The wheelbase of 111.00 allows for extra leg room for the rear passengers.

The original manufacturer suggested retail price (MSRP) was $49,950 when new, with a dealer invoice cost of $45,615. This price was in line with the industry average price for a 4-door Sport Utility.

The standard warranty period for the X5 is 48 months, or 50,000 miles, whichever comes first. This is standard in the sport utility market.

Fuel Efficiency

The 2003 X5 gets 18 miles/gallon on the highway and only 14 in the city. This is subpar for a sport utility truck.

What We Think of the BMW X5

The 2002 model began the promise of the BMW X5. The 2003 expanded on this success and has proven to be a strong seller in most markets. Even with strong competition from other manufacturers BMW hopes that the X5 4.6is will continue to be a profitable vehicle.
