The M5 Base is equipped with a BMW 5.0 liter ten-cylinder engine that utilizes 40 valves. The engine is mated to a Getrag 7-speed Transmission. This configuration has proven to be a successful design for BMW.

The front brakes are disc while the rear brakes are disc. Steering is handled through a power-steering rack-style configuration. The M5 uses power-assisted brakes, with 4-Wheel ABS support. Load balancing is provided by coil front springs and coil in the rear.

Fuel Efficiency

The fuel system for the 2008 M5 is a Siemens MS S65 system, running on gasoline . The fuel is controlled by an electronic system and is a fuel-injected MFI design. The 18.50-gallon tank provides the fuel storage for longer trips.

The 2008 M5 gets 17 miles/gallon on the highway and only 11 in the city. This is subpar for a sedan car.

The 2007 model began the promise of the BMW M5. The 2008 expanded on this success and has proven to be a strong seller in most markets. Even with strong competition from other manufacturers BMW hopes that the M5 Base will continue to be a profitable vehicle.

    Good article. At first I felt like I needed to refute your review of the BMW M5, but after further reflection I can see your point of view. Perhaps my personal M5 Base is an abberation. What is everyone else’s experiences?
